I, too, went down to Tanjung Pinang from Singapore and had a similar experience. Very strange indeed. I felt like the only foreigner in the whole place and wondered what sustained the city. It was only later that I came to realise it was where many asylum seekers are detained. Did you see any evidence of that, or do you think they hide them out the back somewhere?
